Manga: Parasyte

If you’re not familiar with game news, the newest Pokemon games, Omega Ruby and Alpha Saphire (ORAS) was just released today. So glad I managed to grab a copy of Omega Ruby even without pre-ordering it WOOHOO. Guess what I’ll be playing for the next week or so XD

Today’s manga is such a classic.

Parasyte vol 1 and 2 covers (English)

Parasyte is a Seinen, sci-fi, horror written and illustrated by Iwaaki Hitoshi. It was serialised from 1990 to 1995 and is completed with a total of 64 chapters compiled into 10 tankobon volumes. An anime adaptation titled, Parasyte -the maxim- (Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu) is currently airing. Two live-action films are also scheduled to be released, one in Dec 2014 and the other sometime in 2015. I currently follow the anime, but this post will just be on the manga.

17-year-old Izumi Shinichi lives with his mother and father in a quiet neighbourhood in Tokyo. One night, worm-like creatures appear on Earth, taking over the brains of human hosts by entering through their ears or noses. One creature attempts to take over Shinichi’s brain while he sleeps, but fails and ends up getting stopped at his right arm instead, giving himself the name, Migi (“Right” in Japanese). Because Shinichi was able to prevent Migi from taking over his brain, both beings retain their separate intellect and personality. Parasyte follows the story of Shinichi and Migi as they learn to live with each other and battle for survival against other parasites.

WARNING: Lots of violence, gore, mutilation, death. A little bit of nudity. One or two short sexual scenes. Some use of profanity. Heavy themes.

Manga: All You Need Is Kill

Spent the day finishing up an assignment and my brain is currently mush, but since the 15 minute group report video is currently exporting, I have and hour and 15 mins to write a post before the day is over. I hope I make it.

Manga: All You Need Is Kill「オール・ユー・ニード・イズ・キル」

All You Need Is Kill volumes 1 and 2 covers

All You Need Is Kill is actually a Japanese military science fiction novel written by Sakuraza Hiroshi and illustrated by Abe Yoshitoshi that was published in 2004. HOWEVER, what I would be talking about in this post would the be manga adaptation of that light novel. Spanning only 2 volumes and 17 chapters, the manga adaptation of this series is categorised as Seinen, action. It is written by Takeuchi Ryosuke and illustrated by Obata Takeshi, serialised from Jan to May 2014. A graphic novel adaptation was released in North America in May 2014. What might be most familiar to most of you guys, would be the film adaptation, titled Edge of Tomorrow that was released at the end of May 2014. The English-language film tie-in edition of the novel also used this title.

An alien race called “Mimics” have taken over most of the world on a mission to take over the human race. Kiriya Keiji is a new recruit in the United Defense Force, which is battling against these “Mimics”. On his first day of deployment, Keiji and his unit are slaughtered… Or was that a dream? Keiji soon realises that, for some inexplicable reason, every time he dies, he is resurrected and returned back to the day before the battle. Why does this keep happening and how can Keiji escape from this vicious, never-ending cycle?

WARNING: Violence and gore. Death. A lot of deaths. CYCLES of deaths.

Manga: Doodle

I know a lot of people prefer to wait until a manga has been serialising for a while so that there’s a number of chapters to read with plot development, but I’m going to be a little unconventional today and brainwash you guys to be interested in— share about a manga that I’ve only read 3 chapters of.

Please forgive me. I just really love how it started out.

Manga: Doodle 「ドードル」

q002 (1)

Doodle Chp 1 cover

Doodle is an action, supernatural, seinen series written and illustrated by Kohske. Some of you might be more familiar with Kohske-sensei’s better-known work, Gangsta., which I’ll probably post about sometime in the future too. Doodle only started in June 2013 with Shinchosha’s new quarterly comic magazine, Go Go Bunch 「ゴーゴーバンチ」and is currently on irregular publishing. In other words, readers have no idea when and how long until a new chapter’s out. /WAILS IN AGONY

In a world where drawings come to life, each city has a ‘Sin’ of their own in the form of a child with white hair and red eyes. Doodle follows the story of a group of children (titled “Rogues”), from the city of Anfang and their struggle to protect their Sin from other cities’ Rogues. This probably isn’t a very good description of the story, but I’m trying not to give too much away here HAHA.

WARNING: Violence and mild gore. I don’t know, this might not seem like such a heavy warning at all, but the way its told and with the choice of characters being children, it actually ends up very grave and a tad psychologically scarring. But maybe that’s just me.

Its honestly really tricky trying to talk about this series without spoiling much considering all I can reference to is the first 3 chapters, but I’ll do my best.

Manga: Berserk

It’s my 21st birthday today.

That was the reason why I didn’t want to properly start posting from the first day of November. Heheh. Was originally planning to start this blog project as a present to myself this year, so with this, participating in NaBloPoMo all works out XD And here I get to start with what is and will probably always be my favourite manga of all time: Berserk 「ベルセルク」

berserk-1555299

Berserk Vol 1

Berserk is a dark fantasy, action, seinen series written and illustrated by Kentaro Miura. As you can see from the art style from the first volume, its a pretty old series… Older than I am, HAHA. It was published almost exactly 24 years ago in Nov 1990 and is still ongoing with over 330 chapters. There’s also a 25-episode anime adaptation that aired from 1997-1998 and a 3-part anime movie adaption in Feb and June 2012 and Feb 2013. I’ll just be talking about the manga for this post.

The story is set in a Medieval-Europe-Fantasy inspired world and follows the life of an orphaned mercenary by the name of Guts and how his world is affected when he meets Griffith, the leader of a mercernery band called the Band of the Hawk. Guts has a VERY unfortunate life. That… doesn’t explain very much, but it’s pretty difficult to describe the story in any more words than that. And you can google the synopsis yourself if you’d like.

WARNING: Okay, there are A LOT of stuff to take note of for this one, where do I even start… Well… Extremely mature for one. Nudity, sex, rape, underaged perversion, masturbation, prostitution, etc. a whole lot of NSFW shit right there. Gory and grotesque. Very violent. Frequent usage of profanity and slurs. Blasphemy… There’s more I could go on, but basically there’s a whole load of shit and you should be prepared and hopefully not turned off by all this.

I don’t know, maybe you’re wondering why anyone’d read something like this huh. HAHA, THAT’S UNDERSTANDABLE. If you’re uncomfortable with any of the above warnings, I’d advise you not to read this series. Although, if you’d like to continue reading this post, maybe you’ll understand just a little bit on how important Berserk is to me.
