Ahahaha crap, didn’t manage to get this out before leaving on trip, but it’s back to reality and the blog backlog XD
Singapore definitely has no shortage of conventions and events for the otaku and geek community, but a majority of them usually happen in the 2nd half of the year. There were one (or two?) much smaller events that I didn’t go for in the first 4 months of 2017, but it’s been 5 months since a relatively more popular con happened, the last one I went for being EOY 2016. This is just a little of my experience on Doujima, that happened 3 weeks ago.
Doujin Market – Doujima was held on 6 and 7 (Sat and Sun) May at the Suntec City Convention Centre, Level 3, The Concourse. Because I had work on Saturday, I couldn’t make it down on the first day of the event, but there was no way I was gonna miss going down on Sunday!
As can be seen from the words on the setup in the photo above, Doujima is Singapore’s largest annual doujin art fair convention. Unlike other events where there’re stage programs and other stuff going on including official and artist booths, a majority of Doujima is dedicated to artists and creators, with a whopping 170 booths showcased at the venue!
Besides the crazy number of Artist and Creator booths, there were other Exhibitors present that took up the middle space of the Exhibition ground. There was a mini stage area on one side of the ground where Seminars and Portfolio reviews were held, but who are we kidding, most of us just went to throw our wallets at all the Artists and Creators, HAHA OTL
As you can imagine from a con choke-full of booths in an enclosed space, the crowd was pretty darn crazy! I was only there on the second day, so I didn’t feel the full brunt of the crowd, but apparently the space between booths was much smaller on Day 1 and the lack of space was so suffocating — people were basically being herded in a line and it was impossible to move in the opposite direction. Some couldn’t even stop at certain booths to get merch! Hearing that from friends was really scary. Kudos to the event staff that took note of feedback and moved the booths to allow more walkway space so it was a lot better on Day 2!
Cosplayed with my Right arm of Voltron, Puffy, for the day! \o/
Really missed the crazy atmosphere of a con and and seeing everyone laughing and spazzing! Met lots of old friends and a few new ones as always. Forgot to get a full-body shot of Puff and I together in cosplay /o\ Was a little too busy throwing money at fan merchandise and hanging out with friends to to take photos of other cosplayers too (oops), so the below 2 photos are of friends’ cosplays.
Akiko Mitsuki and Xun Kyokishi
Totally glad to have met a number of Voltron comrades, woohoohoooooo!! They pointed us to more Voltron merchandise at the con and another fan we met was even wearing awesome Red and Green Lion shoes! They were friggin cool!! Thank you for letting us take a photo with your shoes, weaverofmemories ~
If you’re still not familiar with the series, Voltron: Legendary Defender, please do join us in this black hole if it piques your interest 8D Thank you Puffball for being the Right arm to my Left arm of Voltron again \o> ~~
Thank you so so much to the friends that bought/gave me stuff. You guys are too kind, seriously, thank you. I think I probably spent more than enough at Doujima to cover my absence at Cosfest too, hahahahah, help OTL
Really did miss seeing friends at cons. I’m glad I managed to go down for at least one day of Doujima X)
Another major cosplay event, Cosfest, happened last weekend but I was out of the country and couldn’t make it. If you remember from my previous Cosfest post, last year’s event was held on the first weekend of July and had pretty much been a tradition to be held then, however, it had been pushed forward to a month earlier this year. Because of that and a few other reasons, I guess the hype for it wasn’t as great as it usually is, which was kind of sad 😦
The 2nd half of the year is coming up, which means the number of cosplay and pop-culture events/conventions happening will be picking up too! Will be putting any sort of cosplay progress on hold for the moment because I’ve got a lot to get through with regular life and things haven’t been good lately, but I hope everything works out.
Even if one of my hobbies are on hold, I’ve always got plans for posts on Manga, my Life., haha! It’s usually the problem of being fast enough to get them out before something else grabs my attention, but look forward to more stuff comin’ up XD
