Ok Manga nerds out there, besides checking out Manga Taishou (my post about it previously) every year for amazing reads, you should also check out the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize nominations for more amazing stuff, if you don’t already 🙂
Founded and sponsored by Asahi Shimbun — and named after “the father of manga”, Tezuka Osamu — the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, 手塚治虫文化賞 Tezuka Osamu Bunkashou, (not to be confused with the Tezuka Award) is an annual manga prize awarded to mangakas or their works that best follow manga pioneer Tezuka-sensei’s tradition. To be eligible, the manga had to have had a compiled volume (tankobon) published the year before. Specialists and bookstore employees recommend titles to a committee (that changes slightly every year) for nominations, winners are then announced a few months later and an award ceremony is held.
Asashi Shimbun announced the 8 nominees for the 21st Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize on Thursday:
The only 2 titles I’m familiar with from these nominations are Golden Kamuy (top row 2nd from left) and Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (bottom row 2nd from left), which have both been nominated TWICE for this prize already! I haven’t come across any of the others before, but I’ll always have faith in how good these nominated series turn out to be because both Golden Kamuy and Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu are ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.
(Not to mention, Golden Kamuy also won last year’s Manga Taishou and is now one of my top favourite series of all time! XD)
Super excited to try the rest of those nominated series out, hopefully in the near future! They all look and sound great d(><)b
But of course, I’ll be rooting for Golden Kamuy when winners are announced in late April!! \o/
