I feel like there’re going to be quite a number of Yaoi posts this NaBloPoMo only because there’s less to think about and are easier to write.
Manga: Kaeru no Prince-sama 「かえるの★プリンスさま」 The Frog’s Prince
Kaeru no Prince-sama is a Yaoi, slice-of-life, comedy, romance by Panco. It was serialised in 2012 and is complete with 6 chapters (5 story chapters and 1 extra) compiled into 1 tankobon volume.
Socially awkward Aono was perfectly happy working in the Quality Control department but as fate would have it, he’s been transferred to Sales. As if being ridiculed by his co-workers for his nervous stutter isn’t bad enough, he’s thoroughly mortified when the departmental star Gouzaka overhears him having a breakdown on the roof. But no matter how often he pushes Gouzaka away or how fast Aono runs, Gouzaka is always there by his side… Has this timid frog finally found his Prince Charming? [Description taken and edited from Baka-Updates Manga]
WARNING: Guyxguy. A little NSFW. Nothing superbly explicit: Parts are sometimes shown but not in detail. There are a few scenes, but the home run only happens during the extra.
Please note that there are spoilers in this post.
I’m probably way too sensitive a person, but I felt like crying (just a little) while reading Kaeru no Prince-sama. Not because it was sad or anything like that, but because the slight angst and sweet relationship between the two characters were really really cute.
(This sounds really stupid to be tearing up over that now that I think about it) And because I could relate to Aono’s problems to a certain extent.
The story is told almost completely from the viewpoint of Aono (the uke) so you feel all his insecurities and woes towards public speaking and socialisation. I couldn’t help but empathise and feel so sorry for him. I’m sure many of us have varying levels of social insecurities as well, although I don’t think mine is as bad as his is. Throughout the story though, you can see just how hard Aono works. We all have periods where we’re at our lowest, but Aono sets a great example in reflection and putting in the effort to do the best we can. I swear there are so many Yaoi and BL that have good character role models. And then there’s Gouzaka, who’s the epitome of a fresh gentleman: good-looking, sociable, earnest to a fault… who’s fallen for Aone. It’s a cute match of dreams (which is pretty much what most BL/Yaoi are).
Kaeru no Prince-sama’s progress is probably considered slow compared to many other Yaoi and the story isn’t anything that unique either, but it’s sweet. Panco.-sensei’s art style is clean and cute as well. This is pretty simple-minded stuff, but I like how Aono and Gouzaka’s designs reflect the Frog and Prince theme a lot. With an emphasis on expressions and atmosphere, there aren’t many backgrounds (most of which is to set or remind of the scene location).
Kaeru no Prince-sama was really cute. I think this would be something that could cheer a reader up if they’re feeling down 🙂
